- The award is given by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
- The award is named on the name of Legendry Hockey Player Major Dhyan Chand.
- The award was initiated in 2002.
- The awardee is given Rs. 5,00,000 , a plaque and a scroll of honour.
- Balbir Singh Senior has been honored with a Dhyan Chand Life Time Achievement Award .
- The 90 years old man received the trophy of Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award along with a cheque of Rs. 30 Lakh on March 28, 2015.
- He is also first sports person to receive Padma Shri Award in 1957.
- Balbir Singh's record of most five goals in an Olympic Final still stands and he also recognize as 16 iconic Olympians.
- He was the part of team when India won continuously 3 gold medals in London Olympics (1948), Helsinki Olympics (1952) and Melbourne Olympics (1956).
- He was the captain of the Indian team during the Melbourne Olympics.
