Asian India Connectivity Summit

Introduction

Established on: August 8th, 1967,
Known as: ASEAN India Connectivity Summit.
Organized on: December 11 to December 12, 2017
Venue: New Delhi, India

Objective:

  • To stimulate existing connectivity landscapes, 
  • To recognize issues of concern and develop proper policy 
  • To improve plans and strategy for economic, industrial and trade relations between ASEAN and India. 
  • Theme: Powering Digital and Physical Linkages for Asia in the 21st Century 

Organizers of the summit:

  • The Ministry of External Affairs by collaborating with ASEAN-India Centre (AIC) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). 
  • The supporting organizers are Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Ministry of Power, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Shipping and Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications and Government of India. 
  • The partner organizations are EXIM Bank, IDFC Institute, National Maritime Foundation and Research and information system for developing countries (RIS).

  • Deputy Minister of Information and Communications of Viet Nam (H.E. Mr Phan Tam from ASEAN) 
  • Secretary of State, Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Cambodia (H.E. Tauch chankosal from ASEAN) 

Member countries:

  • In ASEAN India connectivity summit, there are 10 member countries which are Brunei Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. 

Background of ASEAN-India connectivity summit

  • ASEAN-India connectivity summit is a regional association which intends to foster and strengthen collaboration and economic alliance among member countries. 
  • ASEAN-India connectivity scheme has adopted ASEAN declaration which is also known as Bangkok Declaration. 
  • This year's event is arranged to celebrate the silver jubilee of ASEAN-India body. 

Highlights of ASEAN-India connectivity summit 2017

  • This summit is a part of Indian government's constant attempts to back the fulfilment of SDG targets, empower, combine and develop global linkages. 
  • A summit frames a strong cross-border network of production and tries to join regional and sub-regional countries through business partnerships, technology alteration and infrastructure projects. 
  • ASEAN-India connectivity gives a unique stage to form infrastructure connectivity between the policymakers, senior officials of the government, investors, industry leaders, delegates of trade unions and entrepreneurs of India and ASEAN countries. 
  • It directs mainly on sectors like Infrastructure, Roadways, Shipping, Digital, Finance, Energy and Aviation. 
  • In a summit, Union minister of Road, Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari has offered a $1 billion line of credit to support sea connectivity, air connectivity and road connectivity plans with ASEAN countries. 
  • Shri Nitin Gadkari has also introduced fund of $77 million to improve and strengthen manufacturing centres in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. 
  • As connectivity is the core of this summit because it is a roadmap to share prosperity and make economic relations between ASEAN and India strong. 
  • India is connected to projects like India-Myanmar-Thailand, a Trilateral Highway and it is going to be extended From the Trilateral highway to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. 
  • India has also connectivity to Myanmar in the various sector like development, capacity building, infrastructure development, projects and institutional development, this will lead to ease of doing foreign trade with Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh also.
