2. World’s first braille atlas for the visually impaired

  • National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation (NATMO) has developed Atlas for visually impaired that is Braille atlas 
  • It is world’s first braille atlas for the visually impaired

  • NATMO works under Department of S&T, Union Ministry of Science & Technology 
  • It is the apex agency of applied Geo-Spatial technology and pioneer in Thematic Mapping and Atlas Cartography 

3. Nakshe portal:

  • Nakshe portal was launched by Survey of India 
  • It is a web portal that makes open series maps available to Indians for free 
  • It is launched on the occasion of 250th anniversary of survey of India by union minister of science and technology 
Topographic maps or Open Series Maps (OSM) containing natural and man-made geographical features including terrain or topography are prepared by the SoI since its inception in 1767

  • It was identified from few areas in northern Mahendragiri range and scattered coastal hills in northern Andhra Pradesh

7. Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Vigyan Gram Sankul Pariyojana:

  • Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Vigyan Gram Sankul Pariyojana scheme was launched by Ministry of science and technology. 
  • This program was launched in Uttarakhand 
  • This programme will experiment and endeavour to formulate and implement appropriate S&T Interventions for Sustainable Development through cluster approach in Uttarakhand.

9. MANAK scheme

They were selected for developing cryo-electron microscopy for the high-resolution structure determination of biomolecules in solution

11. World Largest Nuclear Power Ship

  • World’s largest nuclear-powered icebreaker ship named as Sibir (Siberia) was launched by Russia 
  • The ship was built under Project 22220 into the water at the Baltic Shipyard. 

12. 2017 Noble prize in Physics:

  • Rainer Weiss, 
  • Barry C. Barish and 
  • Kip S. Thorne 
They were awarded for their contributions to the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) detector and the observation of gravitational waves

13. 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine:

  • Jeffrey C. Hall 
  • Michael Rosbash and 
  • Michael W. Young 
They were awarded for discovering molecular mechanisms controlling circadian rhythm. Their discoveries explain how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronized with Earth’s revolutions

14. SERB Distinguished Investigator Award

  • A new scheme called SERB Distinguished Investigator Award (SERB-DIA) has been approved for early identification and empowerment of exceptional scientists. 
  • The scheme aims to recognize and reward the young scientists who have performed extraordinarily well in the SERB supported projects under its Extra Mural Research scheme, but are yet to reach the stage of advanced professional recognitions like SS Bhatnagar awards/ JC Bose fellowships etc. 

15. Electric Cargo

  • China launched world’s first fully electric cargo ship in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong province. It is the first ship in the world to use lithium-ion battery 

16. World Science Day for Peace and Development

  • The World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated every year on 10 November. 
  • The theme for 2017 is “Science for Global Understanding” 

17. World’s largest combustion research centre

  • National Centre for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD) was inaugurated at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras in Tamil Nadu. 
  • It is world’s largest combustion research centre 

18. Two Mountain Ranges on Pluto

  • Two mountain ranges on Pluto were named as Tenzing Montes and Hillary Montes after Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary by The International Astronomical Union (IAU) 
  • Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand Edmund Hillary were the first mountaineers to reach the summit of Mount Everest 

19. India’s first Hyperloop project:

  • India’s first Hyperloop project will come up in Andhra Pradesh 
  • The Hyperloop will connect Vijayawada and Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh 

20. ISRO mission IRNSS-1 H: Unsuccessful

  • ISRO mission IRNSS-1 H which was launched by using PSLV-C39 from Sriharikota was unsuccessful. 
  • The reason for failure of mission was the heat shield did not separate as a result of which satellite did not complete the 4th stage 

21. First environmental research satellite

  • The name of first environmental research satellite named as Venus (Vegetation and Environment Monitoring New Micro-Satellite) was launched by Israel 
  • The satellite was a joint venture between the Israel Space Agency (ISA) and its French Space agency CNES. 
  • It was launched from Arianespace Vega launcher from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana

  • The world’s first full—scale floating wind farm is being built off the coast of Scotland in the North Sea. The wind farm, known as Hywind 

24. First Bio-CNG (bio-methane) Bus 

  • India’s largest Commercial Vehicles manufacturer Tata Motors has unveiled country’s first Bio-CNG (bio-methane) bus 

25. Jigyasa scheme

  • Jigyasa program is student- scientist connect programme. 
  • The scheme would be implemented by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in collaboration with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) 

26. World’s lightest satellite-KalamSat

  • World’s lightest satellite known as Kalamsat was launched by. The weight of satellite is only 64 grams 
  • The satellite was designed by 18-year-old boy Rifath Sharook from Tamil Nadu. 
  • The tiny satellite has been named as Kalamsat after the former President APJ Abdul Kalam. 
  • The tiny satellite was launched into space from Wallops Island 

27. ISRO Heaviest Rocket

  • GSLV MK-III which is the heaviest rocket ever made by ISRO was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on June 5, 2017. 

28. New Canyons Discovered 

  • Scientists for the first time have discovered three new canyons close to Kovvada in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh 

29. Bharat QR code

  • Indian government launched a quick response (QR) code known as Bharat QR code, 
  • The main purpose of Bharat QR code is to enable digital payments without card swiping machines. 
  • It is world’s first interoperable payment acceptance solution 

30. Discovery of new Geological Continent

  • Geologists have claimed discovery of new geological continent named Zealandia submerged beneath the south-west Pacific Ocean 

31. ISRO Created the History

  • Indian Space Research Organisation launched 104 satellites in a single mission. By launching this ISRO created the history of launching a maximum number of satellites. These satellites were launched by using Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C37, on its 39th mission
