- PBD is toasted once in every two years to make the engagement of overseas Indian community with the Government of India more strong and reconnect them with their own roots.

- The chief guest for this year’s Pravasi Bhartiya Divas was Pravind Jugnauth, Prime Minister of Mauritius.
- January 9 was chosen as the day to celebrate the occasion since it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest Pravasi, returned to India from South Africa and led India’s freedom struggle which changed the lives of Indians forever.
- Selected overseas Indians are honoured with Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Award to recognize their contributions to various fields both in India and abroad.
- PBD conventions are being held every year since 2003.
- These conventions provide a platform to the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and people of the land of their ancestors for mutually beneficial activities.
- 15th PBD convention was held on 21-23 January 2019 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
- Theme of 15th PBD was “Role of Indian Diaspora in building new India”.
