About the Index
- The Global Health Security (GS) Index is the first major index which observes and compare the health security-related capabilities of around 195 countries across the globe.
- The GHS Index compromise of six different indicators namely Prevention, Health System, Detection and Reporting, Compliance with international norms, Rapid Response, Risk Environment. The Index is responsible to rate the different countries according to the performance of all indicators.
- The GHS Index is a project of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), with research by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
Global Findings of the Index
- The Global Security Index finds that No country across the globe is ready for epidemics. The index finds several health problems in all countries and recommended that the National government should take immediate action on this to provide different solutions to protect and prevent the diseases causing the major health problems.
Major findings of the index
- The overall Index score is 40.2 out of 100 and more than 100 countries did not even score above 50.
- More than 90 % of the countries do not show the proofs of security check of personnel for access with dangerous toxins and only 10 % of countries show evidence of their main leader commitment to improving health.
- Many countries not added funding to fill the gap in health security in their national budget.
- Around 100 countries facing major political and security risks to counter biological threats.
- Only 5% show the interest to test their emergency operation centres annually.
Top Five Ranked countries in the Index
- The United States was ranked the top country with a score of 83.5 out of 100, followed by United Kingdom (77.9), Netherlands (75.6), Australia (75.5) and Canada (75.3).

- India has been ranked 57th among 195 countries in a global health security index with a score of 46.5 out of 100.
